Growing up in North Hempstead, the annual fireworks display has always been a cherished tradition in my family. It was more than just beautiful lights in the sky. It was a celebration that brought our diverse community together, reminding us of the shared joy and togetherness we experience every year. However, recently, the fireworks display has been a cause of concern rather than a source of joy.

In recent years, the fireworks shows have become larger, louder, and more focused on extravagant displays rather than maintaining a safe and community-friendly environment. For many residents, especially those with young children, pets, or individuals suffering from PTSD, these displays have become a source of distress. The noise levels and the crowds have escalated to a point where it's no longer a welcoming environment for everyone. Moreover, this massive activity generates large amounts of debris, negatively affecting our local ecosystems, particularly the wildlife in and around North Hempstead Beach Park.

According to recent data, noise pollution from fireworks can reach levels between 150 to 175 decibels. To put this into perspective, prolonged exposure to noises above 85 decibels can already lead to hearing damage. Furthermore, fireworks release harmful chemicals, including heavy metals and perchlorates, which seep into our air and water, posing public health risks. These statistics are alarming and call for immediate action.

We propose that the Town of North Hempstead adopt different event options that prioritize both the entertainment and safety of our community. Options could include incorporating a silent fireworks display with added visual effects, which can provide the same spectacular experience without the noise. Additionally, organizing community events that do not rely solely on fireworks, like festivals with food vendors, artists, and musical performances, can appeal to everyone, making sure families, children, and wildlife are all respected.

The goal of this petition is to urge the North Hempstead Town Council to rethink the format of this event, ensuring that it aligns with the community's needs and values. By adopting these solutions, we can maintain our beloved tradition while fostering an inclusive and environmentally friendly atmosphere.
