Ensure safe firearm storage information in Round Rock ISD
The Issue
In the past three years, two loaded guns have been found on the campus of Stony Point High School in Round Rock ISD. As parents and community members concerned about the safety of our children and school staff, we recognize that more needs to be done to ensure that firearms are stored safely and out of reach of students. This is why we are calling on the Round Rock Independent School District to take immediate action.
Under the recent amendment to Texas Education Code §37.222, it is mandatory for schools to provide information regarding safe firearm storage to every parent or guardian at least three times during the school year. However, this requirement is not effective unless the information is prominently displayed and communicated. We urge RRISD to visibly and effectively make this information accessible and noticeable to all families within the district.
The presence of firearms on school campuses poses a serious threat to the safety and well-being of both students and staff. Recent tragedies across the nation have shown us the potential consequences of inadequate firearm safety measures. It is crucial that we take every possible step to prevent such incidents in our district.
Furthermore, we advocate for RRISD to standardize weapon-reporting procedures for staff members. By establishing a clear and consistent protocol, teachers and staff will be better equipped to respond appropriately and swiftly when weapons are suspected or found on campus. Clear procedures will empower staff to protect themselves and their students, while also ensuring that authorities are quickly informed.
We are not seeking to change the legislation but to ensure that RRISD fully complies with existing laws and embraces a proactive approach to school safety. According to the Everytown Research & Policy, 4.6 million children in the U.S. live in homes with loaded, unlocked firearms, and such statistics highlight the urgency of this issue. By ensuring safe storage information is accessible and standardized, we can significantly reduce the risk of firearm-related incidents, making our schools safer places for learning.
Join us in urging the Round Rock Independent School District to prioritize the safety of its students and staff by implementing these two critical safety measures. Your support is vital in making schools more secure environments for everyone. Please sign this petition to make our community safer.
