Ensure Rose M Gaffney retains a school resource officer
The Issue
I am writing this petition out of a deep concern for the safety and well-being of the children at Rose M Gaffney Elementary School in Machias, Maine. Over the years, having a dedicated resource officer on site has been instrumental in not only ensuring the safety of our children but also in building invaluable relationships between students and law enforcement. This officer is more than just a figure of authority; she has become a part of our school family that our children trust and rely on.
The presence of a resource officer helps maintain a secure and positive environment. According to the National Association of School Resource Officers, having dedicated officers in schools can significantly reduce incidents of violence and bullying. They provide immediate response to potential threats, support conflict resolution, and are a comforting presence for children in a sometimes turbulent world.
Beyond their protective roles, these officers are role models, offering guidance and mentorship. Our children have bonded with this officer, creating a space where they feel safe to express their concerns and seek advice. Removing this essential position not only puts our children's safety at risk but dismantles the trust and friendships that have been carefully built.
The recent decision to reconsider the allocation of a resource officer in our school is alarming. Studies conducted by the National Institute of Justice indicate that schools with resource officers report fewer instances of crime, and student reports of feeling unsafe decline significantly. Furthermore, a 2018 survey by the National Center for Education Statistics showed that the majority of students reported higher levels of trust and improved school climates in institutions with resource officers.
Our children deserve the best possible start in life, and knowing they are safe while at school is imperative. Losing our resource officer would not only increase vulnerability but could diminish the positive strides we have made in creating an inclusive and secure learning environment.
We urge the Machias School Board to reconsider and ensure that Rose M Gaffney Elementary School retains its resource officer, a person whose impact extends beyond safety, fostering community and trust among students.
