Ensure public AEDs are accessible outdoors
The issue
Recently, I came across a distressing article where members of the public were denied access to an automated external defibrillator (AED) because the casualty was not a registered patient at the medical centre. This incident highlights a critical issue in our emergency health response system, where life-saving devices are restricted behind unnecessary protocols. AEDs can make the difference between life and death in cardiac emergencies, and time is of the essence. Every second counts, and access to an AED should be immediate.
In many places, public AEDs are stored inside buildings, often behind locked doors during certain hours or available only to specific groups of people. This practice significantly hampers the effectiveness of AEDs in emergencies when every moment is crucial. It is imperative that we rethink the accessibility of these essential devices. By ensuring that AEDs are stored in secure outdoor cabinets, we can provide 24/7 access, enabling prompt action in the event of cardiac arrest.
According to the American Heart Association, immediate bystander CPR and access to AEDs can double, or even triple, a person’s chance of survival. Despite this, the survival rate for out-of-hospital cardiac arrests remains alarmingly low, partly due to AED inaccessibility. The statistics underscore the need for public AEDs to be stored outdoors, enhancing public safety and saving lives.
We propose that all public AEDs be housed in equipped, weather-resistant outdoor cabinets. These cabinets should be prominently located and have clear signage to ensure that anyone can locate and access them quickly. Maintaining them in this manner would not only uphold their function as public health tools but also reflect the seriousness of our commitment to saving lives.
