As friends, family, and people who have personally been a target of stalking, harassment, and threats online, we know all too well the importance of safety mechanisms like the "block" feature provided by social media platforms. However, alterations to this feature that knowingly expose blocked users to the posts of their blockers is a grave concern. This increases vulnerability, allowing the doors of stalking and harassment to be reopened. We propose a motion to disallow social media platform owners from changing critical safety features, such as "block", in ways leading to harm such as stalking and harassment. According to a survey conducted by the Pew Research Center in 2017, nearly two-thirds of women have experienced some form of online harassment (source: Pew Research Center). This has made the block feature all the more crucial for our safety and well-being. Ensuring this protection measure remains intact and uncompromised is an utmost priority.
