Every Player Deserves to Know the Rules Before They Step Onto the Court.
Competitive tennis teaches discipline, respect, accountability, and fairness.
Players invest countless hours training. Families invest thousands of dollars in coaching, travel, accommodations, equipment, and tournament fees. Many competitors are also students who must balance high-level competition with mandatory school commitments.
When players enter a sanctioned tournament, they should know all the rules that may affect their participation, rankings, and prize money.
This petition calls on Tennis Canada to establish a clear, national standard requiring that all sanctioned tournaments publish complete prize-money eligibility rules before registration opens.
Why This Matters
This initiative was inspired by the experience of a student-athlete who reached the final of a sanctioned tournament and was unexpectedly informed that individual finalist prize money would not be awarded because the player was unable to compete in the scheduled final due to school commitments.
Following a review, Tennis BC worked with the parties involved to resolve the individual matter. We appreciate Tennis BC's willingness to address the issue.
However, the experience highlighted a broader concern that extends far beyond a single tournament.
During the review, one important question emerged:
Were players clearly informed, before entering the tournament, that withdrawing from the final—for reasons such as injury, illness, exams, school obligations, or a family emergency—could result in the loss of finalist prize money?
Although tournament rules were published, they did not specifically state that a player who gave a walkover in the final would forfeit the finalist prize money under those circumstances.
That uncertainty should not exist in any sanctioned tournament.
Players deserve to know the complete rules before deciding to enter—not after they have invested their time, money, travel, and effort to reach the final.
This petition is not about revisiting one tournament or criticizing any individual.
It is about ensuring that every player across Canada has access to clear, transparent, and consistent rules.
Why Clear Rules Matter
Imagine reading this before entering a tournament:
"Please note that any player who gives a walkover in the final will not be eligible to receive finalist prize money."
Whether players agree with such a rule or not, they would at least be able to make an informed decision before registering.
The issue is not whether a tournament may adopt a particular policy.
The issue is that every competitor deserves to know that policy before entering the competition, not during the semifinal weekend or after reaching the final.
Transparency allows players and families to make informed decisions and helps avoid misunderstandings and disputes.
Our Request to Tennis Canada
We respectfully ask Tennis Canada to adopt a national standard requiring that all sanctioned tournaments:
Clearly publish all prize-money eligibility rules before registration opens.
Specifically disclose whether a walkover in the final affects eligibility for finalist or winner prize money.
Publish all circumstances under which prize money may be reduced, withheld, or forfeited.
Provide written reasons whenever prize money is withheld.
Establish a fair and transparent review process for disputes involving prize money.
Encourage consistency in the application of tournament rules across all sanctioned events in Canada.
