The Issue

A Jewish man was brutally attacked in front of his young daughter, and the Montreal Police did not respond for over an hour.

In contrast, a Christian event was swarmed by police forces.  Police threatened a rabbi with arrest simply for wearing a kippah.

It is becoming increasingly apparent that Montreal Police enforce public safety depending on the religion involved.

Statistics show that hate crimes against Jewish individuals in Canada have been on the rise, with Jews being the most targeted group for religiously-motivated hate crimes in the country according to Statistics Canada. This only intensifies the need for protective measures and equitable police responses.

We demand that the Montreal Police review its approach towards crime and safety enforcement, ensuring balanced and fair treatment for all religious communities.   Specifically, we ask the police to:

  • Publish its response time to calls and closure rate in aggregate for hate crimes, broken down by religion
  • Review its officer training program to ensure that officers are trained to be cross culturally sensitive
  • Do all within their power to speedily find the perpetrator of this violence

Everyone in our society deserves to feel safe and valued, and that begins with trust and accountability in policing practices.

Sign this petition to demand that the Montreal Police give equal importance to all communities, irrespective of their religious beliefs. Let’s make a difference together.
