Ensure Maximum Sentencing for the Killer of Police Dog, Nyx

Ensure Maximum Sentencing for the Killer of Police Dog, Nyx
The Issue
Update: fellow community members! we are so close to 1000 signatures. I, the petition organizer, have begun drafting 3 letters that will be sent to Illinois lawmakers and attorneys. Your voice will be heard. We thank you so much for your time and support. We have already been in contact with a few Illinois state representatives who have assured me that they’re on board with maximum sentencing for the individual who has been bragging about committing this ludicrous crime against a police officer. The fact that there is no remorse is only making us work harder to change this law!
We are seeking justice for Nyx, a dedicated police dog from Rockford, IL who was tragically shot and killed while on duty. The individual charged with this heinous act should face the maximum sentencing under law. In many states, killing a police dog is considered a felony offense with penalties ranging from fines to imprisonment (source: Animal Legal Defense Fund). Currently in Illinois- killing a K-9 Officer is considered a Class 3 Felony and is punishable by only 2-5 years maximum in prison.
It's important to remember that police dogs like Nyx are not just animals; they are valued members of our law enforcement community. They undergo rigorous training and work tirelessly alongside their human counterparts to keep our communities safe. Let us honor Nyx's service to this community by ensuring that her killer faces the full extent of the law. Please sign this petition to demand justice for Nyx and send a clear message that violence against our four-legged officers will not be tolerated.
We are proposing a MINIMUM of 10-15 years served for the crime of killing an on-duty K-9 Officer in the state of Illinois. This murder was intentional and obviously pre-meditated since there was no need for this man to be carrying or firing a gun. Changing this law will harm NO ONE but the murderer.
To make a larger difference in this community in regards to protecting our K-9 officers and getting this law CHANGED once and for all- feel free to contact our Winnebago County State’s Attorney’s office to let them know where you stand! Every voice matters and will help when it comes time to pass this proposed bill! Thank you in advance.
