Ensure mail delivery to every home in Ashton, IA

On August 14, without any warning or advanced notice, the post office in Ashton, IA closed its doors. For a town like ours, this has been incredibly disruptive. We relied heavily on our local post office not just as a place to send and receive mail but as a vital community hub. The sudden closure has forced residents to travel long distances just to access basic postal services, and for many in our town, this simply isn’t feasible.
Ashton is a small town, with many elderly residents who do not have easy access to transportation. The lack of a local post office means increased difficulty for these individuals to receive important communications and packages, such as medications, which are critical for their health and well-being.
Moreover, the closure happened without any form of public consultation or opportunity for Ashton residents to voice their needs and concerns. We deserve to have our mail and packages delivered directly to our homes, removing the unfair burden currently placed on our community.
It is not just a matter of convenience but a critical necessity for our everyday lives and community operations. The Postal Service has long been seen as a universal right and shouldn’t be a privilege denied to smaller communities.
We urge local and federal postal authorities to immediately take action to establish a mail delivery service to every household in Ashton, IA. This includes assessing potential partnerships with nearby postal services, implementing temporary solutions, or reopening an accessible postal office in our town. We have to get our mail in the Sibley post office when the post office is open, which is when most of us with in Sheldon, which is in the opposite direction. There's a plan to give us cluster boxes but that simply is too inconvenient because if we have a package delivered that is too large for those boxes we'll have to make a 14 mile round trip to get it.
