The Issue

Prom is a once-in-a-lifetime event that many high school seniors look forward to. It's a night of glitz, glamour, and memories that last a lifetime. However, this year, the seniors at Landstown High School in Virginia Beach, VA, are being unfairly denied the traditional prom experience due to a decision to hold the event in the school cafeteria rather than at an elegant external venue. This change in location not only diminishes the excitement and grandeur associated with prom but is also unfair to students.

The prom is meant to be a special occasion, representing the culmination of years of hard work and the transition into adulthood. Holding the event in the school cafeteria, a space associated with daily routines and not celebratory events, undermines its significance. Students deserve an opportunity to celebrate in a location that reflects the importance of their achievements and the festive nature of the occasion.

In previous years, Landstown High organized proms at beautiful venues that allowed students to dress up, feel special, and create unforgettable moments. This year’s decision fails to honor this tradition and expect students to accept a "lowered standard" for no given reason. Other schools continue to host proms at external venues, so why should Landstown students have to settle for less?

Moreover, feedback from students and families suggests that this decision was made without proper consultation, leaving stakeholders feeling unvalued and ignored. Not only does this choice affect the students, but it also impacts parents and guardians who want to see their children celebrated appropriately.

We urge the Landstown High School administration to reconsider this decision and work with the community to seek alternative suitable venues that can accommodate the prom. There are numerous venues in Virginia Beach that could shine as the backdrop for this important event. Actions such as forming committees of parents and students, pooling resources for venue booking, and seeking sponsorships or partnerships with local businesses could be explored to host a truly memorable prom.

Please sign this petition to ensure the senior students of Landstown High School have the opportunity to celebrate their prom in a venue befitting the significance of their achievements. Let's work together to provide a memorable and beautiful prom night for our deserving seniors!
