The Issue

Our hearts broke as we saw first hand the horrendous pain endured by Gideon, a three-month-old puppy, who was horrifically burned over half of his body. His pain was profound, and his scars, both physical and psychological, will haunt him for life.

Invisible victims such as Gideon underscore the urgent need for immediate intervention in cases of animal abuse. Unfortunately, current regulations limit the ability of MDARD registered shelters to take decisive action. They are powerless to intervene in emergency situations or ongoing animal abuse, and lack the authority to advocate legally for the voiceless victims under Michigan law (MCL section 324.40111a).

This is utterly unacceptable. Animal rights are not optional and we must extend stronger protective measures to our helpless furry friends. According to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA), approximately 1.5 million animals are euthanized in US shelters each year due to abuse and neglect. This sheer number illuminates the pressing need for harsher penalties for perpetrators, to deter future incidents of cruelty.

We are therefore calling on the legislation to empower MDARD registered shelters with the necessary authority to intervene and prosecute cases of animal abuse actively and robustly. With such powers, we can prevent more innocent beings from suffering the same fate as Gideon, making our society a safer place for all animals.
