Ensure Just Treatment of Dogs by Police and Enforcement Agencies

Ensure Just Treatment of Dogs by Police and Enforcement Agencies

The Issue

I’m writing this petition with a heavy heart, having recently lost my beloved Lola; a 2-year-old Mastiff x Irish Staff. Lola was struggling with a phantom pregnancy after her second season, which led to somewhat out-of-the-ordinary behaviour. Despite no signs of aggression, her intensified barking drew scrutiny, and due to an ill-advised complaint from a neighbor and the oversight of Essex police force's protocols, I tragically lost my girl.

The essence of this story is sadly not unique to Lola, but stresses the plight of countless innocent dogs at the mercy of the system. Staggering figures reveal that hundreds of dogs are euthanized each year due to misinterpretation of their behaviour or failure to follow adequate procedures.

The police and other enforcement agencies need to adopt uniform, rigorous animal welfare standards. This would ensure that all animals, especially dogs like Lola, are treated with the compassion and fairness they deserve. It's high time we reassess the way our enforcement agencies interact with animals, primarily to avoid the unnecessary loss of life - a pain no pet owner should have to endure.

Through this petition, we're urging the higher-ups in such enforcement agencies to revisit their guidelines and imbue them with a deep understanding of dog behaviour. The bias, ignorance, or haste of a single person should not be a death sentence for an innocent animal.

Like humans, dogs can have off days too. Lola's story reminds us that they should not be penalised for such behaviour; instead, it should be understood and managed with patience, kindness, and expertise.

Please sign this petition to initiate a reassessment of protocols and safeguard our pets from undue harm. We seek justice for Lola, and all the dogs unjustly treated out there. With your help, we can ensure that the barks of our loved ones are heard loud and clear in the corridors of power.
