The Issue

For many of us, GLP1 medications aren't just another option—they are a lifeline. As someone who has been relying on this medication to manage my chronic condition, the sudden stop in insurance coverage has been a devastating blow. The discontinuation of insurance coverage leaves me and many others in a precarious position, where necessary treatment becomes financially burdensome, if not downright unattainable. This isn't merely about inconvenience; it's about essential healthcare access.

GLP1 medications are crucial for managing conditions like type 2 diabetes, obesity, and other metabolic disorders. Studies have shown that these medications not only improve blood sugar levels but also have benefits such as weight loss and cardiovascular protection, which drastically improve quality of life. According to the American Diabetes Association, the prevalence of type 2 diabetes continues to rise, affecting millions across the country, with significant health care costs associated when these conditions aren't properly managed.

However, despite proven effectiveness, insurance companies are dropping coverage for GLP1 medications, citing cost concerns. This decision reflects a lack of regard for long-term health savings and patient welfare. The American Medical Association reports that untreated diabetes and obesity often lead to severe complications, resulting in higher expenditures over time due to hospitalizations and additional treatments. Preventative care, like that provided through GLP1 therapy, helps mitigate these costs significantly.

By cutting coverage, insurance companies are not only jeopardizing patient health but also neglecting the community's overall well-being. We need our insurers to prioritize health outcomes over cost-saving measures in the short term.

I urge you to join me in calling upon insurers to reinstate coverage for GLP1 medications. We need to demonstrate to insurance companies that the public supports access to these life-changing medications for all who need them.
