Subject: Clarification of Ideological Basis of Islamic Political Parties

Respected Sir,

I respectfully submit that in a constitutional democracy where Islam is the state religion, the public must know whether the name of Islam in fact represents the religion as understood by the wider Muslim ummah, or whether they are advancing the ideas of a single scholar or sectarian interpretation.

In particular, Jamaat-e-Islami derives its political ideology from Abul Ala Maududi. Many of his writings, particularly Khilafat-o-Mulkiyat, and his tafsir of the Quran, contain ideas that many of the senior ulama of the subcontinent, from both Hanafi and Ahl-i hadith schools, opposed as a distortion of normative mainstream Sunni Islam. Instead, those are Mawdudi's personal and controversial interpretations. For this reason, allowing Jamaat-e-Islami to present itself as an “Islamic” party misleads citizens and voters.

I therefore respectfully petition the Election Commission to adopt rules requiring:

1. That every Islamic party explicitly declare in its constitution whether it is based on normative Islamic teachings or the ideology of a particular scholar. That this declaration be made public so that voters are not misled.
2. That Jamaat-e-Islami, in particular, should be identified as a party based on the ideology of Abul Ala Mawdudi, and not representative of Islam as a whole.
3. Jamat-e Islami changes its name to Mawdudibadi Islami Jamat, or some other name that includes Mawdudibadi, to reflect its sectarian Mawdudibadi nature.

বিষয়: ইসলামী রাজনৈতিক দলের মতাদর্শ সম্পর্কে স্বচ্ছতা আনয়ন

মাননীয় মহোদয়,

বাংলাদেশের সংবিধানে ইসলাম রাষ্ট্রধর্ম হিসাবে স্বীকৃত হওয়ায় জনগণের জানার অধিকার রয়েছে—যে সকল রাজনৈতিক দল নিজেদেরকে ইসলামী দল হিসাবে উপস্থাপন করছে, তারা আসলেই কি সাধারণভাবে গৃহীত ইসলামের প্রতিনিধিত্ব করছে, নাকি কোনো নির্দিষ্ট ব্যক্তির বা মতবাদের অনুসারী।

বিশেষভাবে, জামায়াতে ইসলামী তাদের রাজনৈতিক মতাদর্শ গড়ে তুলেছে আবুল আ'লা মওদুদীর চিন্তাধারার উপর, যা ইসলামের একটি ব্যক্তিক ও বিতর্কিত ব্যাখ্যা। উপমহাদেশের বহু বরেণ্য আলেম মওদুদীর মতবাদকে বিকৃত বলে প্রত্যাখ্যান করেছেন। এ অবস্থায় জামায়াতে ইসলামীকে শুধুমাত্র “ইসলামী” দল হিসেবে উপস্থাপন করা জনগণকে বিভ্রান্ত করছে।

অতএব, আমি নির্বাচন কমিশনের নিকট আবেদন করছি—

১. প্রতিটি ইসলামী দলকে তাদের গঠনতন্ত্রে স্পষ্টভাবে ঘোষণা করতে হবে যে তারা সাধারণ ইসলামী শিক্ষা অনুসরণ করছে নাকি কোনো নির্দিষ্ট ব্যক্তির মতবাদে প্রতিষ্ঠিত।
২. এই ঘোষণা সর্বসাধারণের জন্য উন্মুক্ত করতে হবে যাতে ভোটাররা বিভ্রান্ত না হন।
৩. জামায়াতে ইসলামীর ক্ষেত্রে বিশেষভাবে উল্লেখ করতে হবে যে তারা আবুল আ'লা মওদুদীর মতবাদের অনুসারী, ইসলাম ধর্মের সার্বজনীন প্রতিনিধি নয়।

এমন একটি ব্যবস্থা গ্রহণ করলে জনগণের শিক্ষা, সচেতনতা ও সংবিধানের মর্যাদা রক্ষা পাবে।
