The Issue

I am a parent in North Carolina, committed to providing my children with the best educational opportunities, which for us means homeschooling. However, like many other homeschooling families, we face significant barriers when it comes to allowing our children to participate in athletics. Specifically, some public school districts that require homeschool students to take academic classes through the school district to be eligible for sports and others that completely bar access.

These restrictions are not only unfair but undermine the well-being and development of our children. Participating in athletics offers invaluable benefits, including fostering teamwork, enhancing physical health, and developing leadership skills. Why should  children be denied these opportunities because of a choice in their academic learning environment?

In fact, 35 states across the United States have adopted policies allowing homeschool students to participate in public school sports without such restrictive conditions. Studies have shown that allowing these students to join school sports teams increases inclusivity and promotes equality among young athletes, ultimately contributing to a healthier community.

The goal is twofold: first, to push for state-wide legislative change in North Carolina that guarantees homeschool students the right to participate in athletic programs offered by public schools without the prerequisite of enrolling in classes. Second, advocating specifically within the Iredell-Statesville Schools to ensure immediate access to sports for homeschooled students without restrictive barriers.

A successful case study can be found in Florida, where the "Tim Tebow Law" allows homeschooled students the ability to participate in extracurricular activities at local public schools. This law has not only worked effectively but has also enhanced community cohesion and student performance.

We implore lawmakers and the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction to recognize the significance of this issue and take immediate action to develop laws that reflect equity and bursting opportunities for all students, regardless of their mode of education.

Join us in our mission to ensure fair access and remove obstacles for homeschool students. Every child deserves the same chance to pursue their passions and develop their talents—help us make this a reality. Sign this petition and stand with us in advocating for change.
