The Issue

Why We Need Change

For many children, school meals are their main hot meal of the day. Recent reports from parents and children show that Isle of Man primary school meals are:

  • Too small, leaving children hungry
  • Unappealing and poorly presented
  • Inconsistent across schools
  • Lacking transparency about suppliers, preparation, and consultation
  • Not meeting the standards promised under Caroline Walker Trust (CWT) guidelines and the "dieticians" advice, which was also not communicated to parents that they would be following.

Generic reassurances from the Government Primary School Meals service do not match the reality children experience. Growing children deserve meals that are healthy, substantial, and appealing.

Evidence from the UK

Jamie Oliver’s Feed Me Better campaign (2004/05) transformed school meals across the UK:

  • Removed ultra-processed foods
  • Introduced freshly cooked, balanced meals using local produce
  • Led to mandatory nutritional standards (School Food Trust, 2006)

Outcomes included:

  • Improved concentration, behaviour, attendance, and academic results
  • Children satisfied and full, not hungry
  • Reduced reliance on packed lunches

If schools in England achieved this almost 20 years ago, the Isle of Man can do the same today.

Examples of Improved Menu Options

Main Meals:

  • Homemade chicken & vegetable curry with rice and naan
  • Shepherd’s pie (lean beef or lentils) with seasonal vegetables
  • Baked fish fingers (fresh, not processed) with potato wedges & peas
  • Pasta Bolognese (lean beef, hidden vegetables)
  • Vegetarian chilli with beans, peppers & rice
  • Roast chicken with stuffing, gravy, roast potatoes & seasonal vegetables

Sides:

  • Steamed seasonal vegetables
  • Salad bar with a variety of options

Desserts:

  • Natural yoghurt with fruit
  • Rice pudding with fruit
  • Wholemeal fruit muffin (low sugar)
  • Fruit salad with custard
  • Cheese & crackers with apple slices

Our Requests

We are asking the Isle of Man Government to provide:

✅ Transparency: Portion sizes, nutritional analysis, and evidence of compliance with standards

✅ Fresh, substantial, child-friendly meals: Meals children enjoy and that leave them full

✅ Balanced sides & desserts: Alternatives to fruit-only desserts for additional energy and protein

✅ Consistency across schools: Every child receives the same standard

✅ Accountability: Feedback is collected, monitored, and acted upon
