💔 OUR CHILDREN DESERVE COMPASSION — GIVE GRIEVING FAMILIES A VOICE
Imagine a little girl standing beside her mum, asking a question that breaks her heart all over again…
“Mummy, where have my special pictures and cups gone? Why has someone taken them from Daddy?”
Her daddy died of cancer. She is still trying to understand why he isn’t coming home. Visiting his resting place is one of the ways she feels close to him. The pictures and cups she leaves there are special to her. They are a little girl’s way of showing her daddy that she still loves him and misses him.
Now imagine her mother’s pain as she tries to answer that question while carrying her own grief.
What do you say to an innocent child who has already lost her daddy, when the little things that help her feel connected to him are suddenly gone?
There is no easy answer. No explanation can take away that hurt.
And this is not just about a little girl and her daddy. It could be a little boy visiting his mummy. It could be a mother trying to help her children cope after losing their father, or a father trying to comfort his children after losing their mother.
Children should never be forgotten in decisions about cemetery policies. They are grieving too. They may not fully understand death, but they understand love, loss and the special things that remind them of the parent they can no longer hold.
For a child, a teddy bear, a drawing, a photograph, a special cup or a handmade gift is not rubbish or clutter. It can be something precious that helps them feel close to the person they have lost.
💔 THINK ABOUT THE FAMILIES LEFT BEHIND
I know this heartbreak personally. I am a father who lost my beautiful son, Anthony. Discovering that special tributes left at his resting place had been removed without us being notified caused pain that is difficult to put into words.
But this petition is not just about Anthony or my family. It is about every grieving family who deserves compassion, dignity and respect.
We understand that cemeteries need rules. We are not asking for rules to be ignored. We are asking why there cannot be better communication, reasonable opportunities to collect personal belongings, and greater compassion for families who are already living with unimaginable loss.
🇦🇺 WE ARE CALLING ON THE SOUTH AUSTRALIAN GOVERNMENT TO ACT
We want a review of cemetery policies and meaningful protections for grieving families, including:
Clear communication and warning before memorial items are removed wherever practicable.
Fair and compassionate policies that families can easily understand.
Special consideration for children who have lost a parent and need meaningful ways to remember them.
A reasonable opportunity to collect personal items before removal wherever possible.
A fair process for families to raise concerns and have their voices heard.
We cannot change the fact that these children have lost a mum or dad. But we can work towards making sure they are not caused additional heartbreak through policies that could be handled with greater compassion.
Please put yourself in that mother’s shoes. Imagine having to explain to your little girl why the special things she left for her daddy have disappeared.
Wouldn’t you want someone to listen? Wouldn’t you want change?
This is about humanity. This is about compassion. This is about protecting the memories of those we love and remembering the innocent children who are grieving too.
