Ensure fair representation for black spa professionals
The Issue
I've spent years immersing myself in the world of spa and wellness, where I've received top-notch training and honed my skills alongside many other talented professionals of diverse racial backgrounds. Yet, when I attend industry events hosted by leading brands, I'm met with disappointment and frustration. The faces of those chosen to represent the industry seldom reflect the rich diversity of our field, especially the absence of black spa professionals as significant voices and experts.
This isn't just a personal observation—it’s an industry-wide problem. The beauty and wellness sector, valued at over $190 billion globally, should celebrate all talents and perspectives that contribute to its success. However, statistics reveal that black professionals often face systemic barriers in gaining fair representation and opportunities, such as brand deals and speaking engagements. This lack of visibility not only stifles the career growth of qualified black spa professionals but also perpetuates a homogenized view of who can be considered an expert in wellness.
The conscious omission of black professionals from the forefront of our industry’s narratives and stakeholders misses a crucial opportunity to evolve and genuinely connect with diverse consumer bases. According to a McKinsey report, companies with diverse executive teams are 33% more likely to financially outperform their peers. Diversity isn't just a moral imperative—it's an economic strategy.
We need to urge major brands in the spa and wellness industry to actively include black spa professionals in top-tier roles at events, offer equitable brand deals, and invite them as featured speakers. These brands should commit to diversity targets and transparent reporting of their diversity and inclusion initiatives, showcasing a genuine investment in supporting underrepresented talent.
I call upon industry leaders—companies, associations, and influencers—to step up. Our industry will only thrive when we promote fairness and equality by recognizing and celebrating the rich diversity of talents within. Only then can we truly cater to and represent the global community our industry serves.
Please sign this petition to advocate for an equitable and inclusive spa and wellness industry for all professionals.
