Ensure fair funding for head and neck cancer in the UK
The Issue
I write to you from the anguishing position of a recipient of head and neck cancer. This experience has laid bare a troubling reality: the UK government's distribution of funds for cancer research is unequally weighted, leaving head and neck cancers, including brain tumours, underfunded. The trauma doesn't stop with the disfiguring aftermath of the disease; it extends into the lack of awareness and inadequate psychological support systems to deal with such life-altering changes.
The NHS, while a commendable institution, is currently overburdened, leading to treatment delays that are unbearably long. This delay is a heavy toll on patients who are already fighting through the sheer terror of disfiguring surgeries and devastating mental health challenges. The stigmatization linked to the misconception that head and neck cancers are exclusively due to smoking only deepens this struggle. This stigma does a grave disservice to children, innocent of any such correlation, who face deadly brain tumours with far less hope than they deserve.
Statistics reveal that head and neck cancers are the sixth most common form of cancer internationally, yet in the UK, funding allocations don't reflect this prevalence. Children with brain tumours and adults with head and neck cancers urgently need a fair share of research funding to alleviate suffering and improve treatment outcomes. Each year, over 12,000 new cases are diagnosed in the UK alone.
We propose the government reassess its allocations in the upcoming budget. Increasing funding to reflect the actual need will not only raise survival rates and improve quality of life but also foster a greater understanding and awareness in our communities.
Let us work together to persuade health ministers, NHS leaders, and policymakers to reallocate the existing budget fairly.
