For us Northern fans, accessing these matches involves substantial travel, additional costs, and a sense of being undervalued by the organisers.
Currently, many high-profile Test series are predominantly, if not exclusively, hosted at Southern venues. This geographical bias excludes Northern fans from experiencing the thrill of live cricket and asserts an unjust imbalance. Such an imbalance in distribution not only restricts access for existing fans but also limits opportunities to inspire future generations of cricket enthusiasts in the North.
The pricing criteria, too, are of grave concern. Ticket prices are seeing up to a 50% increase, making it increasingly unaffordable for average families. Additionally, exorbitant food and drink prices at stadiums create an exclusive atmosphere that starkly contrasts the spirit of cricket as a diverse and inclusive sport open to all.
The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) and related stakeholders must adopt a fair and equitable strategy in match scheduling and ensure pricing policies that allow access to all cricket fans, irrespective of regional or financial status. A well-considered rotation policy could involve hosting an equal number of tests in Northern venues, ensuring all regions have a fair share of matches.
Moreover, ticket prices should be regulated to avoid drastic hikes, with family packages and concessions available to foster inclusivity. Stadium catering services should offer reasonably priced food and drinks, aligning with widespread consumer pricing standards.
