Ensure fair access to prom for SEND pupils at Ingleby Manor School
The Issue
Every child deserves to enjoy the memorable experience of attending a school prom, a milestone event that marks the end of their school journey. Unfortunately, for pupils with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) at Ingleby Manor School, this experience is being unjustly taken away based on attendance percentages, despite their unique circumstances and agreed support measures.
It saddens me deeply to witness how pupils on reduced timetables, a support strategy formally agreed upon with the school's administration and the Local Authority, are being penalised. These reduced timetables are essential in supporting the educational and emotional well-being of SEND pupils, helping them to thrive in an environment tailored to their needs.
However, when it comes to prom eligibility, these pupils are unfairly excluded simply because their attendance figures don't match those of full-time pupils. This policy fails to consider the specific arrangements that cater to their needs and discriminates against them under the guise of standard criteria.
it is a breach of the Equality Act 2010. Excluding these children not only impacts their confidence but also their sense of belonging amongst peers, a fundamental part of any young person's school experience.
We urge Ingleby Manor School to reassess their current criteria for prom attendance. Prom should be an inclusive celebration for all students, not dictated by an attendance record that doesn't account for personalised support requirements. By allowing exceptions for those on reduced timetables, we can celebrate the diversity and inclusivity that Ingleby Manor School aims to uphold as per their motto “changing lives”
