Ensure Equal Water Access for All on the Moens Chain of Lakes

Ensure Equal Water Access for All on the Moens Chain of Lakes
The Issue
Water sports have always played a significant role in my life. Growing up, I spent countless hours enjoying the thrill of skiing, jet skiing, and wakeboarding on our local waters. These experiences are not merely recreational; for me, they are a cherished part of family tradition and one I am eager to pass on to my children. However, recent possible restrictions on the Moens Chain mean that the freedom to engage in these activities, particularly the use of wake boats and ballast, is under threat.
The Moens Chain in Rhinelander, WI is a shared natural resource, a place that should be accessible to everyone regardless of their preferred water activities. Currently, the limitations impact individuals and families who seek the joy and bonding that comes from water sports. It's not just about fun; it's about teaching future generations the values of skill, safety, and respect for our natural habitats while engaging in water-based activities.
Statistics show that water sports are enjoyed by millions, fostering significant physical and mental health benefits. Despite these positive aspects, there's an increasing trend to limit access, pushing devoted hobbyists and families away from enjoying what they love. This isn't just a local concern but a growing national issue.
The right to access water should not be restricted more than current state law. Wisconsin limits full recreational boat use to lakes 50 acres and greater. Moens lake, not including the other 4 lakes of the chain, is 461 acres by itself. This is over 9 times larger than the state law. To maintain harmony and fairness for all enthusiasts, facilitated behaviors like skiing, jet skiing, wake surfing, and wakeboarding—including the use of wake boats and ballast—must be preserved on these waters.
We urge local authorities and policymakers to recognize the need for balance. Rather than shutting down access or placing unfair restrictions, lets allow all water sports enthusiasts to have their rightful space.
By signing this petition, you are acting for the enjoyment, education, and family bonding associated with water sports. Let's preserve our right to share these treasured experiences with future generations. Please sign and help us safeguard the inclusive spirit of the Moens Chain waterways for everybody.
