Ensure Equal Transportation for Central Square Private School Students
The Issue
In the Central Square School District, it's disheartening to observe disparities in providing equal transportation opportunities for all students. While Bishop Ludden students in our district are privileged to receive transportation services, it is deeply concerning that students attending Christian Brothers Academy (CBA) are being left behind, despite falling well within the bounds outlined by Education Law 3635. This law mandates that transportation must be provided for private school students if the school is within 15 miles of a designated pickup point. From the current designated location at 5900 Mud Mill Rd, CBA is approximately 14.8 miles away, clearly meeting the legal distance requirements.
The exclusion of CBA students from transportation services compromises their right to equal education opportunities and places an undue burden on parents who strive to provide their children with quality education at a private institution. Education Law 3635 is designed to ensure fairness and access for all students regardless of the nature of the schools they attend within the stipulated distance. It is disappointing and unfair that this protection is not being extended to all students, perpetuating inequality within our community.
By implementing transportation for Central Square students to attend CBA, we uphold the intentions of Education Law 3635, ensuring all children have the necessary resources to access their chosen educational institutions. This move would demonstrate our district’s commitment to equity and adherence to laws designed to protect educational rights.
We call on the Central Square School District to review and revise their transportation policies to extend the same transportation access to all eligible students in our district attending private schools, including CBA. Act now to support equal opportunities for all our students and comply with existing educational laws.
