Ensure Equal Access to Jackie Robinson Tennis Courts

The Issue

Bedstuy - an area experiencing rapid gentrification. One of the results of this transformation is that we now have LESS access to public spaces than residents in other neighborhoods. This disparity is painfully evident when it comes to the local Jackie Robinson Tennis Courts, one of the few walk-on courts in Brooklyn. Courts that were long ignored and neglected until community residents fought for their restoration. Unlike the courts at Fort Greene, Lincoln Terrace, Leif Ericson, Highland, South Oxford and more, we are not permitted to play during daylight hours or walk on the court freely. The Parks Rules and Regulations section 2-01 clearly states that courts are open daily, weather permitting, barring construction, repair, or special events. This should apply to the Jackie Robinson courts as it does everywhere else. Yet these public parks are locked, and the public locked out. It is time to end this inequality and to encourage the use of the park, which enhances public safety.  There should be no difference in access to recreational facilities based on one's neighborhood. Therefore, we are calling on the Parks department to implement consistent regulations for all outdoor tennis courts in Brooklyn and promote equal access for all. Please, sign this petition and demand that our courts remain open and accessible.
