The Issue

We are launching this petition to demand complete transparency, rigorous legal accountability, and un compromised safety for the survivor in the ongoing child abuse case involving a senior cleric from Anuradhapura and the victim's mother.

As reported by local and international media, the suspect a high-ranking religious figure was arrested on May 9, 2026, following an investigation by the National Child Protection Authority (NCPA). The charges involve the repeated abuse of a minor girl, beginning when she was just 11 years old. The suspect has since been released on strict conditional bail with a foreign travel ban while the Attorney General reviews the case file for formal prosecution.

Because of the extreme power, influence, and societal status held by the accused, there is a profound public concern that institutional bias, political pressure, or witness intimidation could compromise the integrity of this trial. Sri Lankan law explicitly dictates that all citizens are equal before the law. A title, robe, or status must never serve as a shield against criminal accountability, especially when a child’s life and future have been shattered.
