Ensure ADA Access at Wailoa Art Center for Disabled Artists and the Community
The Issue
Petition Statement: We are asking the State of Hawaiʻi to provide ADA-accessible transportation, such as a golf cart, at the Wailoa Art Center so people with disabilities can safely access the facility.
Why This Is Important: Wailoa Art Center will host the monthl-long AHA! Art Immersion, the largest ADA celebration in Hawaiʻi, along with the 19th Annual Abled Hawaiʻi Artists Art Festival on July 25, 2026. These events feature disabled artists from Hawaiʻi, the U.S. mainland, and Japan. The exhibition includes:
Art by disabled artists
Interactive sensory installations
Accessible, hands-on experiences
These events are meant to celebrate access — but the building itself is not accessible.
The Problem: The current entrance ramp at Wailoa Art Center-
- Is too steep
- Has no handrails
- Has no flat resting areas
- This makes it unsafe or impossible for many people who use wheelchairs, walkers, canes, or who have limited strength or balance.
What We Are Asking For: Until the ramp is fixed, we ask the State to-
- Provide an ADA-compliant golf cart or similar transport; and
- Make it easy for disabled visitors to request and use this service.
Why This Matters: The ADA requires public spaces to be accessible. When barriers exist, temporary solutions must be provided. Disabled people should not be turned away from public art, public events, or public spaces.
Call to Action: Please sign this petition to support access, safety, and dignity for disabled artists and community members.
Accessibility is not optional.
Everyone deserves access.
Also, sign this petition so we can provide you with a letter template that you can email to the Hawaii State DLNR State Parks.
