Ensure accessible facilities at Peninsula Public Library

Ensure accessible facilities at Peninsula Public Library
The Issue
I am deeply concerned about the lack of accessibility at the Peninsula Public Library located at 280 Central Avenue, Lawrence, NY. As a taxpayer and a patron of the library, I believe it is crucial that this public facility adhere to the requirements set forth by the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) to ensure all members of the community, including senior citizens and those with disabilities, have equal access to its resources and services.
Currently, the library's elevator has been out of service since October 2025, hindering access to essential parts of the building, including the second floor and the basement. This basement houses vital programs, collections, and the meeting room used for board meetings. Without a functioning elevator, individuals with mobility challenges are unjustly prevented from participating in these activities and accessing these services.
The lack of an operational elevator not only violates the ADA but also fails to meet the community's ethical standards of inclusivity and equality. It is heart-wrenching to know that our senior citizens and those dependent on mobility aids, who deserve equal rights and opportunities, are unable to fully utilize the library.
The library serves as a cornerstone of our community, promoting education, culture, and social interaction. Ensuring its facilities are accessible to everyone is not just a legal obligation, but a moral one.
I urge the Peninsula Public Library Board and local government officials to take immediate action in repairing or replacing the elevator to make the library fully accessible. This should include a commitment to regular maintenance checks to prevent future issues. The library must prioritize inclusivity and work promptly to resolve this situation.
By signing this petition, you can help advocate for a more just and accessible community space where everyone, regardless of physical ability, can enjoy equal access to life-enhancing resources and opportunities. Please sign and support the call for accessibility at Peninsula Public Library.
