Ensure accessibility in Mumbai's PVR ICON theatre
The Issue
The opening of the PVR ICON theater in Mumbai was an event many cinephiles eagerly anticipated. Yet, as I experienced for myself when visiting, this state-of-the-art facility has overlooked a very critical aspect - accessibility for elderly and disabled patrons. As a resident who cherishes cinema and often visits theatres with my elderly parents, I was saddened to see the challenges faced by them and other elderly and disabled individuals navigating a place that should be welcoming and inclusive to all.
In the heart of a progressive city like Mumbai, it is incomprehensible that a major construction such as the PVR ICON theater would not prioritize the needs of all its potential patrons. More than 1.2 billion people globally live with disabilities, according to the World Health Organization. In India alone, millions require accessible infrastructure to partake fully in public life. The theater's current layout, with inaccessible entryways, lack of ramps, and inadequate seating arrangements for those with mobility challenges, significantly restricts their right to enjoy the arts.
The Universal Design principles, if applied in public spaces, ensure that environments can be accessed, understood, and used to the greatest extent possible by all people, regardless of their age, size, ability, or disability. Modern theatres, especially ones as renowned as PVR ICON, must meet these standards to truly serve the entire community.
We propose PVR ICON in Mumbai undertakes immediate renovations to include wheelchair ramps, elevators with braille indications, and designated seating within the cinema halls that accommodate people with disabilities and the elderly. Adequate staff training to assist patrons who might need help navigating the theatre is also essential.
It's not too late for PVR ICON to set a precedent by transforming their theater into a model of inclusiveness and accessibility. By signing this petition, you champion the idea that everyone, regardless of their physical capabilities, deserves to experience entertainment without any barriers. Sign and help us call on PVR ICON to make the necessary changes to their theatre today.
