Join the Fight for Access to Telemedicine Services, Regardless of Location
The Issue
My Mom was diagnosed with Stage 4B metastatic ovarian cancer in September 2022. As her daughter and caregiver, I have witnessed firsthand the challenges and limitations imposed by the current healthcare system. We have exhausted all care options available to her locally in Maryland, and now we are seeking the help of doctors outside our state.
Having undergone multiple rounds of chemotherapy and surgery, my Mom is very weak. Unfortunately, due to Maryland law, doctors are prohibited from facilitating virtual visits with patients. This means that she will have to travel long distances to specialty clinics like MD Anderson in Texas or the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota just for a first visit or consultation.
This situation adds unnecessary physical strain on patients seeking information. And for patients already battling a serious illness, the cost of traveling, accommodation, and other associated expenses can be overwhelming. It is unfair that access to medical care is hindered by outdated regulations that fail to recognize the potential benefits of telemedicine.
According to a study published by Health Affairs (2018), virtual visits can reduce hospitalizations by 77% and emergency room visits by 86%. These statistics highlight the immense value of telemedicine in improving patient outcomes while reducing healthcare costs. By allowing doctors to facilitate virtual visits with their patients across state lines, we can ensure that individuals like my Mom receive timely and accessible medical care without unnecessary travel burdens.
Furthermore, during these unprecedented times when COVID-19 has disrupted traditional healthcare systems worldwide, it is crucial that we embrace innovative solutions like telemedicine. Many states recognized this need and implemented temporary measures allowing cross-state virtual consultations during the pandemic. Unfortunately, those same states have since reinstated these antiquated and absurd laws.
It's time for lawmakers to take action and permanently remove barriers preventing doctors from facilitating virtual visits with their patients across state lines. By doing so, they will not only improve access to medical care but also promote patient-centered healthcare that prioritizes convenience, affordability, and overall well-being.
Sign this petition to urge lawmakers to ensure all patients have access to medical care by removing restrictions on virtual visits with doctors across state lines. Let's make a difference in the lives of countless individuals who are currently facing unnecessary obstacles in their pursuit of proper healthcare.
Together, we can create a future where every patient has equal and convenient access to quality medical care regardless of their geographical location.
Note: Failure to act now will ensure that you, too, will be denied access to critical and potentially life-saving resources should you find yourself in need (I pray that you will never share this experience).
