Currently, B.Sc. Nursing students undergoing their mandatory internship face an untenable situation. We work tirelessly in hospitals across India, assuming roles equivalent to those of staff nurses. We shoulder the critical responsibilities of patient care, administer medications, and often handle emergency protocols. Despite the substantial contributions we make and the workload we endure, many of us receive little to no stipend for our efforts. This is not only unfair but also unsustainable for the students who are investing in their education to serve their community.

Imagine working full-time in a high-pressure environment without being compensated. This is the reality for many nursing interns who, in essence, provide the healthcare system with an indispensable workforce. The lack of a fair stipend not only undervalues the significant contributions of nursing interns but also places a financial strain on students, many of whom rely on this income to offset educational loans and daily expenses.

In many developed countries, nursing students receive fair compensation for their mandatory internships, recognizing their invaluable contributions to the healthcare system. In India, it is imperative that we adopt a similar approach by establishing a minimum stipend of at least 20,000 INR per month for B.Sc. Nursing interns. This will not only provide financial support but also motivate more students to dedicate themselves to this noble profession without the hindrance of financial burdens.

A recent study found that fair compensation during internship programs improves job satisfaction, reduces stress, and encourages better performance. Moreover, acknowledging interns' contributions by offering a fair stipend will also enhance their educational experience and prepare them better for their future roles as registered nurses.

We call upon the Nursing Council of India and healthcare institutions nationwide to standardize stipends for nursing interns and ensure that they are fairly compensated for their labor and dedication.
