The Issue

We, the concerned citizens of Tamworth, Staffordshire, urge the local authorities and relevant stakeholders to take immediate action in addressing the pressing issues faced by our homeless population and vulnerable individuals. Additionally, we demand that toilet facilities in Tamworth town centre remain accessible 24 hours a day, rather than being limited until 5pm.

1. Help for the Homeless:
Tamworth is not immune to the growing issue of homelessness that plagues many communities across the country. According to recent data from Shelter UK, there were an estimated 320 people experiencing homelessness in Staffordshire during autumn 2020. This number represents a significant increase from previous years and highlights an urgent need for support systems tailored specifically towards this vulnerable group.

2. Support for Vulnerable Individuals:
In addition to homelessness, there are numerous vulnerable individuals within our community  who require assistance and support. This includes elderly residents living alone, people with disabilities or mental health conditions, and those facing financial hardships due to unemployment or low-income jobs.

3. Lack of Accessible Toilet Facilities:
One crucial aspect often overlooked is access to clean and safe toilet facilities throughout the day and night. Currently, public toilets in Tamworth town centre are only available until 5pm which severely limits options for those who may require them outside these hours.

4. Dignity and Hygiene:
Access to proper sanitation facilities is a basic human right that should be afforded to all members of society regardless of their circumstances or time of day. Denying individuals access not only compromises their dignity but also poses serious health risks.

5. Safety Concerns:
The absence of accessible toilets during night-time can lead individuals without shelter or temporary accommodation resorting to unsanitary alternatives such as alleyways or secluded areas which compromises both their safety as well as public hygiene standards.

We believe it is the responsibility of our local authorities and relevant stakeholders to address these pressing issues promptly. By ensuring 24/7 access to toilet facilities in Tamworth town centre, we can provide a safer and more inclusive environment for all residents, particularly those who are homeless or vulnerable.

We call upon the Tamworth Borough Council, local businesses, and other concerned parties to collaborate on finding viable solutions that prioritise the needs of our community. Together, let us work towards a town that supports its most vulnerable members and upholds their basic rights.
