Enough is Enough: Reparations for Haiti

The Issue

The United States should pay US$1 billion in reparations for the wrongs it has done to Haiti since 1804.  The killings of the black pig and the elimination of the rice market, as well as the US occupation of the country for 19 years on thinly veiled pretexts are well documented and all but instruments to destabilize and confuse Haiti´s paths to becoming a functioning democracy.

When it became independent in 1804, Haiti faced a very hostile international community sustained by the US. For over half the century into its independence, the US totally denied Haiti the status of an independent country, unable to accept nor process the blacks' self determination and self affirmation to live free or to die, especially when slavery was fully legal and at the center of the US's Southern states' economic development.

Haiti does not need more boots on the ground, but for the United States to stop destroying the very fabric of an independent state as it has done since the country's birth. The US can finally face the harsh reality of its incessant meddling and oppressive policies that have crippled the Caribbean island.
The US government must start by addressing these unfair treatments to Haiti, for it has everything to win with a stable and prosperous Haiti
