The Issue

In 2025, the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) was at the center of a major overhaul of how the federal government runs. But the public still can’t see the records that show how those decisions were made. Taxpayers paid for that work, and they deserve to see the receipts.

A watchdog group, Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW), sued for DOGE’s records under the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA). FOIA is the law that lets anyone request government documents. A federal judge and a federal appeals court both ruled in CREW’s favor. Now the Supreme Court has agreed to hear the Trump administration’s appeal. The administration argues DOGE was a presidential advisory body, so open-records law doesn’t apply to it.

CREW disagrees. Its attorneys told the Court that “Undisputed facts in the public record — including the President’s statements — confirmed that (DOGE) was wielding enormous independent authority across the federal government,” according to the Associated Press.

This isn’t a left-or-right issue. Whether someone supported DOGE’s work or opposed it, every American has a stake in knowing how public money and public agencies were handled. And whatever rule comes out of this case could shape what future presidents of either party are allowed to keep secret.

No one has to wait for a court ruling to do the right thing. President Donald Trump can direct the release of DOGE’s records today. Congress can make clear that any group directing the work of federal agencies has to follow open-records law.

Sign the petition to tell President Trump and Congress: release the DOGE records now, before the Supreme Court decides whether the public gets to see them at all.
