Enlist 200+ years old heritage of Ladang Tok Pelam as National Heritage Complex
The Issue
The historical Surau Tok Pelam located in Kampung Ladang, Kuala Terengganu is more than just a place of worship; it stands as a beacon of cultural heritage and identity for the people of this vibrant city. For generations, this mosque has been a landmark that has not only defined the skyline of the capital city but has also been a cherished part of countless family stories, including my own. As a descendant connected to the line of those who have maintained this beautiful structure, the thought of it being demolished by a certain body of government organization is not only deeply distressing but also unfathomable.
The mosque is an irreplaceable symbol of our community's rich history. Its architectural magnificence draws visitors from near and far, contributing significantly to local tourism and thus to the city's economy. Yet, beyond its economic impact, the mosque serves as a reminder of our shared past, a past that is interwoven with values, traditions, and memories that have been passed down through generations.
Destroying this mosque means erasing a piece of our city's soul, a link to our roots and a marker of our identity. It is crucial for us to preserve such heritage for the future generations who deserve to understand and appreciate their rich cultural legacy.
There are viable alternatives to demolition. Restoration and conservation efforts could be implemented instead. Not only do these options maintain the structure's historical integrity, but they also promote sustainable use of the building, ensuring it remains a functional part of our community. Funds can be raised through community events, grants, and collaborations with heritage organizations, all of which could provide the necessary financial support for such a project.
We urge the relevant government officials to reconsider the decision slated for demolition. Let us take a stand to protect our cultural heritage and find a solution that honors our past while preserving it for the future. Sign this petition and let your voice be heard for the preservation of the historical mosque in Kuala Terengganu. Together, we can make a difference.
