When people choose teaching as their profession, it is for the love of children and their passion for education. They do not choose teaching for fame or fortune. They do it for the students... bottom line. Currently, students are suffering due to teachers being overworked and underpaid. When going into this profession, most people know that the pay is insufficient, but they are still driven and motivated to become educators. However, enough is enough.

North Carolina is losing good teachers and support staff in every county due to the unrealistic expectations they face each day. Some days classroom teachers will go 8 hours without having a break to go to the bathroom. The lack of planning time during their contracted hours leaves them working 50+ hour weeks. In addition, North Carolina has yet to pass an education budget, so the measly compensation teachers receive has STILL not been given to them.

Due to this lack of time and support, lessons are not as engaging or effective as they should be. This is causing a ripple effect. When teachers are not valued as the professionals that they are, it directly effects the quality of education for their students. Not to mention that because of the pandemic, students are grade levels behind where they "should be", yet teachers are still being evaluated by standardized test scores when the focus should be on filling in the gaps and meeting students where they are in their learning process.

Unless the North Carolina Board of Education wants to lose quality teachers who are passionate about this profession, they MUST make changes to the working conditions and increase the pay of their educators and support staff.
