Enhance Welfare Standards for Livestock Globally

The Issue

Throughout my life, I've harbored a deep concern for the suffering inflicted upon animals. This concern stems not only from a desire to see animals live more humane and dignified lives, but from a broader philosophical standpoint: reducing animal suffering inherently reduces the total suffering experienced in our world. Animal welfare affects us all ethically and morally, and it's imperative to take drastic steps to ensure the creatures providing for human needs are treated with the utmost respect and care.

One of the most pressing issues regarding animal welfare concerns egg-laying hens, broiler chickens, and pigs. These animals are often raised in deplorable conditions, densely packed into spaces with little room to move, and subjected to stress and health issues due to lack of attention to their basic needs. According to the Animal Welfare Institute, each year, billions of chickens and pigs are raised in factory farm settings worldwide, and there is a dire need for improved standards.

Egg-laying hens frequently suffer in battery cages, where they are unable to exhibit natural behaviors such as dust bathing, perching, or even spreading their wings. This confinement leads to both physical and psychological distress. Broiler chickens, bred to grow rapidly, often experience heart failure, difficulty walking, and chronic pain due to unnatural growth rates.

Pigs, highly intelligent and social animals, are often confined in gestation and farrowing crates so narrow they cannot even turn around for nearly their entire lives. This practice is not only cruel but also disregards the natural behaviors and needs of pigs, causing immense suffering.

Implementing higher welfare standards is a critical step in reducing animal suffering. Humane practices such as using cage-free systems for hens, slower and healthier growth processes for broilers, and banning the use of gestation crates for pigs are essential changes necessary across all farming sectors. Countries, corporations, and consumers need to work together to enact and enforce regulations that prioritize the well-being of these animals.

Please join me in urging global leaders and agricultural industry stakeholders to commit to raising the welfare standards for livestock and drastically improve the quality of life for these animals. Sign this petition to advocate for a significant reduction in global animal suffering and promote a world where animals are treated with the dignity and respect they deserve.
