The Issue

Residents, pedestrians, and students of Montclair Elementary School face significant risks daily due to the perilous traffic conditions on 11th Avenue, particularly between Monaco and Quebec streets. This stretch of road has become a danger zone, with frequent near-miss incidents that threaten the safety and well-being of our community.

The average speed of vehicles on this section of 11th Avenue exceeds the legal limit by an alarming margin. This not only puts the lives of students attending Montclair Elementary at risk, but it also endangers local residents and pedestrians.

Numerous studies from reputable institutions highlight the correlation between reduced speeds and enhanced safety in residential areas. Implementing strategic measures such as the installation of speed cushions, clearly visible crosswalks, improved sidewalk continuity, and other traffic calming devices can significantly mitigate these risks.

Furthermore, increased police presence/enforcement during peak hours can deter speeding and enhance compliance with traffic laws. Community awareness campaigns can also be pivotal in educating drivers, ensuring they remain vigilant and considerate while navigating through this area.

By taking these steps, we will foster a safer environment conducive to the health and security of all who live and move through this community. Our children deserve a safe path to their school, and our residents have the right to feel secure within their neighborhood.

We urge the local government and traffic authorities to take immediate action to address these concerns. Sign this petition to demand that 11th Avenue is made safer for every pedestrian, student, and resident. Your support is vital in initiating the changes necessary to protect our community.  Preventing serious injury or loss of life must be a priority. Our community should not have to wait for a tragedy before meaningful safety improvements are made.
