Enhance street safety in Grand Central Park

The Issue

Grand Central Park deserves safe streets for its residents.

Many of us have witnessed — or narrowly avoided — dangerous traffic situations involving excessive speeding, rolling through stop signs, tailgating, and even drivers swerving around stopped school buses. Recently, our community experienced its first traffic fatality at one of our busiest intersections — a tragic and preventable loss that underscores the urgency of this issue.

This is deeply personal for the families who live here. Children walk to bus stops. Parents push strollers. Residents jog, bike, and cross these streets every day. Our roadways should reflect the reality that Grand Central Park is a residential community — not a high-speed cut-through.

While our neighborhood does have multiple 4-way stops, many drivers fail to fully stop, or approach intersections at unsafe speeds. Existing traffic controls must be strengthened to improve compliance and visibility.

We respectfully urge the City of Conroe to implement enhanced traffic safety measures, including:

• Increased visibility at intersections (oversized reflective stop signs, flashing beacons, stop-ahead warnings, rumble strips, and bold pavement markings)

• High-visibility crosswalks at key pedestrian corridors

• Targeted traffic calming measures, such as speed humps in areas with repeated speeding concerns

• Focused enforcement during peak traffic and school hours

These are evidence-based strategies proven to reduce crashes and protect pedestrians. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, traffic calming measures can reduce accidents by up to 60%, and cities nationwide have seen measurable improvements in pedestrian safety after implementing similar enhancements.

The recent fatality is a painful reminder that proactive safety improvements cannot wait. Our community deserves infrastructure that prioritizes the lives of residents over convenience for through-traffic.

Grand Central Park is home to families, children, and neighbors who should feel safe walking their own streets. We ask the City of Conroe to prioritize meaningful traffic safety improvements in our neighborhood.

Please sign this petition to help create safer streets for everyone who calls Grand Central Park home.
