The Issue

Every morning, I send off my children to their schools. I have both elementary and high school kids who take the school bus along 10th Avenue in Lake Worth, FL. As a parent, my priority is their safety, yet I'm growing increasingly worried about the dangers they face due to reckless driving in our area.

The situation on 10th Avenue is alarming. Despite clear traffic laws intended to protect the children commuting via school buses, drivers frequently ignore the rules. Vehicles routinely speed past school buses even when they're stopped with flashing lights and stop signs extended, endangering the lives of our kids every single day. This blatant disregard for safety regulations is not only illegal but a ticking time bomb waiting for a tragic accident to happen.

Statistics reveal that numerous accidents involving school buses occur annually, and many of these could be avoided if drivers adhere to traffic laws. It's heart-stopping to think of our children being at risk simply while trying to get to school. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, school buses are approximately 70 times safer than traveling by car, but this statistic presumes that drivers observe the traffic laws designed to protect school buses and their passengers.

To address this problem, we need immediate action. Increasing law enforcement presence during school bus hours could act as a deterrent against careless driving. Implementing additional traffic calming measures like speed bumps or heightened signage can remind drivers to slow down and stay alert. Moreover, strengthening penalties for violating school bus safety laws would enforce greater compliance among drivers.

Our children deserve to travel to and from school without the threat of unsafe driving hovering over their daily commute. We must demand the authorities to take immediate steps to enhance the safety of school bus routes on 10th Avenue.

Join me in urging local law enforcement agencies and city officials to prioritize this urgent safety issue. Sign this petition to help protect our children and ensure safer school bus travel in Lake Worth, FL.
