Enhance Safety Measures for Assateague Island's Wild Horses

The Issue

Gizmo, the beautiful and healthy 16-year-old mare, was recently horrifically hit and killed by an unknown driver. This tragic incident has broken the hearts of thousands, and it's a painful reminder that our iconic, majestic wild horses on Assateague Island are at risk every single day. We are fed up with these senseless deaths due to people speeding through the area.

The wild horses of Assateague Island are not just animals—they are symbols of the island's natural heritage and charm. Yet, despite their importance, they face significant dangers from vehicular traffic and inadequate road safety measures. The urgency to act is now. Too many have been lost due to human negligence and lack of proper protective measures.

We urge the authorities to implement more speed bumps throughout Assateague Island. Speed bumps are proven to reduce vehicular speed and can drastically decrease the likelihood of accidents involving the wild horses. Additionally, we call for the installation of some low-level lighting along roadways, specifically in the areas where horses have previously been killed. Proper low-level lighting can greatly improve visibility at night and help prevent collisions. Restricted auto traffic after dark would be another implementation to save Assateague horses.

Furthermore, we strongly advocate for stricter consequences for drivers involved in hit-and-runs with these animals. Such enforcement will not only serve as a deterrent but will also emphasize the seriousness of protecting these wild creatures.

By taking these actions, we can create a safer environment for the wild horses, preserving them for future generations to behold. This issue isn't just about saving the horses, it’s about preserving the very spirit and essence of Assateague Island.

Join us in urging the local authorities to prioritize the safety of these beloved horses. Let's prevent another tragedy like Gizmo’s from happening again. Please sign this petition and stand with us in demanding these essential safety measures be put into place immediately.
