We, the residents and members of the local community, are calling on North Lanarkshire Council to take meaningful action to address speeding and road safety concerns on Victoria Place and the surrounding streets in Airdrie.

For years, residents have raised concerns about vehicles travelling at excessive speeds through this residential area. Despite these concerns, we still have inadequate traffic-calming measures.

The need for action is becoming more urgent. Significant new housing developments in the surrounding area are bringing increased traffic onto local roads, while children, families and pedestrians regularly use these streets. There are also nurseries and schools in the area, making road safety particularly important.

Residents have witnessed dangerous driving and excessive speeds, and accidents have already occurred locally. Thankfully, these incidents have not resulted in fatalities, but we should not have to wait until somebody is seriously injured or killed before preventative action is taken.

What we are asking North Lanarkshire Council to do:

We ask the Council to carry out a fresh and comprehensive road-safety assessment of Victoria Place and the surrounding affected streets, including appropriate speed monitoring at locations and times that accurately reflect residents’ concerns.

The assessment should take account of:

• The increase in traffic from recent and ongoing housing developments
• The presence of nurseries and schools in the area
• Children, families and pedestrians regularly using these streets
• Residents’ repeated reports of speeding and dangerous driving
• Previous road traffic accidents and near misses

Following this assessment, we ask the Council to introduce appropriate traffic-calming and road-safety measures. These could include raised tables, speed cushions, vehicle-activated speed signs, improved pedestrian crossings or other suitable engineering measures.

This is not about inconveniencing responsible motorists. It is about reducing excessive speeds and making our community safer for everyone.

We should not have to wait for a serious injury or fatality before action is taken.
