Enhance pedestrian and bicycle safety in Manorville NY
The Issue
Chapman Boulevard Safety & Mobility Initiative
Community Petition to Improve Pedestrian and Bicycle Safety
Request for a Comprehensive Transportation Safety Study and Infrastructure Improvements
We, the undersigned residents and supporters of the Manorville community, respectfully request that the Town of Brookhaven conduct a comprehensive safety evaluation of Chapman Boulevard between County Road 111 and South Street and prioritize improvements that make this corridor safer for everyone.
Chapman Boulevard is one of Manorville’s primary residential roadways and is used daily by families, children, pedestrians, cyclists, runners, dog walkers, school bus riders, and motorists. As our community has grown, traffic volume has increased, yet the roadway has not been updated to safely accommodate everyone who uses it.
Currently, pedestrians and bicyclists often have little or no dedicated space, forcing them to travel close to moving traffic. This creates unnecessary safety concerns for residents of all ages and limits opportunities for walking, biking, and other healthy outdoor activities.
Rather than requesting one specific type of improvement, we ask the Town to evaluate the corridor and determine the most effective solutions based on engineering, traffic patterns, roadway conditions, and community needs.
Potential improvements may include:
- Sidewalks -or- Dedicated bicycle lanes
- Shared-use walking and biking paths
- Paved shoulders
- Crosswalk enhancements
- Appropriate street lighting
We respectfully request that the Town of Brookhaven:
Conduct a comprehensive pedestrian and bicycle safety study for Chapman Boulevard from County Road 111 to South Street.
Evaluate current traffic volumes, roadway geometry, and pedestrian and bicycle activity.
Develop recommendations for the safest and most practical infrastructure improvements.
Include the recommended project or projects in future Capital Improvement Program planning.
Pursue available Suffolk County, New York State, and federal transportation grants to assist with funding.
Engage Manorville residents throughout the planning and design process.
Investing in safer infrastructure will benefit residents of all ages by improving mobility, encouraging healthy lifestyles, increasing accessibility, and creating a safer roadway for pedestrians, bicyclists, and motorists alike.
We believe Chapman Boulevard should be a roadway that safely serves everyone—not just vehicles. We respectfully ask the Town of Brookhaven to partner with the Manorville community to evaluate and implement meaningful safety improvements for this important corridor.
Thank you for your consideration and your commitment to the safety and well-being of our community.
