Enhance officer safety on DC interstates

Enhance officer safety on DC interstates
The Issue
Update: Officer Terry L. Bennett has succumbed to his injuries last night (1-7-26). Please keep his family and co workers in your prayers
Every day, law enforcement officers put their lives on the line to protect and serve our communities. However, as a resident of Washington, D.C., I am gravely concerned about the safety of our officers patrolling the busy interstates of I-695, I-295, and I-395. The lack of emergency lanes and insufficient safety measures endangers not only their lives but also those of commuters and travelers.
These interstates are some of the busiest and most crucial roadways in the D.C. area, handling tens of thousands of vehicles daily. Unfortunately, they are not equipped with dedicated emergency lanes, leaving officers vulnerable as they perform their duties, whether it’s responding to accidents or conducting traffic stops. A single moment of inattention or a distracted driver can lead to disastrous accidents, with potentially fatal outcomes.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, law enforcement officers face one of the highest risks of roadside injuries and fatalities. In recent years, there have been numerous cases reported where officers were struck by vehicles while on the side of the road. These tragedies are preventable with the proper infrastructure and legislation.
I urge the D.C. Mayor, Metropolitan Police Department and the Department of Transportation to prioritize the safety of our officers by implementing crucial design changes. Key measures should include the establishment of emergency lanes on these interstates, improved lighting for better visibility during nighttime stops, and clear, durable signage alerting drivers to upcoming roadway incidents. Additionally, implementing stricter penalties for drivers who do not obey move-over laws can further prevent tragic accidents.
By signing this petition, you are advocating for the lives of those who risk everything to ensure our safety. Join me in calling for swift action to protect the brave men and women of law enforcement and make our interstates a safer place for everyone. Together, let's make sure that the next time an officer steps foot onto our highways, their safety is no longer in jeopardy. Please sign and share this petition to make a difference.
