Last night, a terrifying incident occurred that has shaken our sense of security at Ohio State University. A fellow student was robbed at gunpoint outside my campus dormitory, highlighting the urgent need for enhanced safety measures on our campus. In addition to this, an Ohio State athlete was recently shot attempting to get groceries at Kroger. As concerned students, we demand immediate action to ensure the safety and well-being of every member of our university community.

This petition is personal to me because I am a student at Ohio State and live in the dorm affected last night. No student should ever have to endure such a traumatic event while pursuing their education. It is crucial that we come together as a community and demand change.

According to recent crime statistics from the Ohio State University Police Division (OSUPD), there has been an alarming increase in reported crimes on or near our campus over the past year. Incidents ranging from thefts and assaults to armed robberies have become distressingly common occurrences, leaving us feeling vulnerable and unsafe in what should be an environment conducive to learning.

To address these concerns, we call upon university administrators, local law enforcement agencies, and relevant stakeholders to take immediate action by implementing the following measures:

1. Increase Campus Police Presence: We urge OSUPD to enhance its presence throughout campus by increasing patrols during peak hours when students are most vulnerable.

2. Improve Lighting Infrastructure: Insufficient lighting creates dark areas where criminals can easily hide or carry out illicit activities unnoticed. We request that additional lighting fixtures be installed across campus walkways, parking lots, and other high-traffic areas.

3. Expand Security Camera Network: Surveillance cameras act as a deterrent against criminal activities while providing valuable evidence for investigations. We ask for an expansion of the existing security camera network in strategic locations throughout campus.

4. Strengthen Emergency Communication Systems: In times of crisis or potential threats on campus, it is essential that timely alerts and updates are communicated to all students, faculty, and staff.
