Whether it is a domestic pet, a stray animal on the street, or wildlife just trying to survive in their natural habitat – I feel a strong personal urge to protect them all. For me, every animal deserves respect, safety, and a life free from harm or neglect.

Tigard, OR, is a wonderful community filled with people who care about the well-being of others. However, our current animal protection laws need enhancements to truly safeguard the animals with whom we share our lives. At present, there are gaps in legislation that leave animals vulnerable to neglect and abuse. We need comprehensive laws that ensure justice and safety for all animals, big or small, wild or domesticated.

Statistics from the Humane Society show that every year, millions of animals suffer due to weak protection laws. This is not just a national issue; it affects our local community as well. By strengthening our local ordinances, Tigard can become a model city for animal welfare across Oregon and beyond.

Specifically, we need to increase funding for local animal shelters and welfare organizations, ensuring they have the resources necessary to rescue and rehabilitate hurt or abandoned animals. There's also a need for stricter penalties for those who mistreat or neglect their animals, serving as a deterrent against cruelty.

Furthermore, educational programs should be implemented in schools and community centers to teach responsible pet ownership and the importance of coexisting peacefully with our wild neighbors.
