English Football Clubs to Fly the St George’s Flag and Union Flag and Ban Political Flags
The Issue
We are calling on the Football Association, Premier League, EFL and English football clubs to introduce a clear, consistent and nationwide policy governing the display of flags at English football grounds.
We believe that English football clubs should proudly represent the country in which they play by making the St George’s Cross and the Union Flag a permanent part of their official matchday displays. These flags should be flown from a flagpole at the stadium, whether positioned inside the ground, outside the ground or on the stadium itself, wherever reasonably possible.
At the same time, clubs should not use their stadiums or official matchday displays to promote political movements, political campaigns, international conflicts or political causes. This principle should apply equally to every political cause and every country, regardless of the political position being promoted.
Football brings together millions of people from different backgrounds and with different political views. A football club should provide a place where supporters can come together through their shared love of the game and their club, rather than being used as a platform for political messages.
This petition therefore calls for:
- The St George’s Cross to be officially displayed at every English football ground.
- The Union Flag to be officially displayed at every English football ground.
- Both flags to be flown from a flagpole at the stadium, either inside, outside or on the stadium itself, wherever reasonably practicable.
- Clubs to be prohibited from officially displaying political or campaign flags.
- Clubs to be prohibited from officially displaying flags used to promote political causes, movements or international conflicts.
- The same rules to apply consistently to all political causes and all foreign countries.
- The Football Association, Premier League and EFL to establish and enforce a clear nationwide policy.
This petition is not directed against any particular country, political movement or cause. It is a call for consistency, national representation and political neutrality across English football.
Football should unite supporters through the game they love. We believe the national flags of England and the United Kingdom should have a permanent place at English football grounds, while political campaigning and political statements should remain separate from official club displays.
If you support a consistent, politically neutral approach to flags in English football, please sign this petition and support the campaign.
