The Issue

Across South Africa, communities are crying out for change, facing persistent issues like potholes, sewage spills, and water shortages that remain unaddressed. These problems are often left to fester due to the appointment of local councilors who lack the necessary skills or commitment to public service, having been selected behind closed doors without considering the people's needs.

I am starting this petition because these critical issues affect our daily lives, our safety, and our future. The current process of selecting councilors is failing us. We deserve leaders who are chosen based on their abilities and dedication to our communities, rather than through opaque, undemocratic methods. It's time for a shift in how our local governance is structured.

The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) and all political parties must take decisive action to reform the candidate selection process for the 2026 local elections. We propose implementing a transparent, merit-based system that allows communities to have a voice in nominating and vetting candidates. This system should prioritize candidates with proven track records of community service and problem-solving skills, ensuring they can address the infrastructure and service delivery issues we face.

By allowing citizens to actively participate in the selection process, we can ensure accountability and elect representatives who genuinely have our interests at heart. This change would foster a more democratic and effective local government that is reflective of the community's needs.

We call on the IEC to lead by example and mandate political parties to revise their candidate selection processes. Let’s make the 2026 local elections a turning point for our communities, where transparency and meritocracy prevail.

Please sign this petition to demand that the IEC and political parties step up and create a fair, open, and community-driven process for selecting local council candidates. Together, we can pave the way for a brighter, more equitable future for all South Africans.
