The Issue

As residents  of the greater Lansdowne area, and our daily life has been severely impacted by the blatant traffic violations committed by minibus taxis, particularly during the morning and afternoon peak hours. The constant chaos and disregard for traffic rules have made it nearly impossible for residents  in the community and road users passing through to navigate the roads safely. Blocked intersections, speeding, and taxis using the shoulder of the road have become alarmingly common occurrences, creating a dangerous environment for all road users.

This is not just an inconvenience; it's a matter of public safety. The reckless behavior of these drivers puts lives at risk and adds undue stress to our daily commutes. The congestion and delays caused by these traffic violations are not just frustrating—they degrade our quality of life and limit mobility for all of us living in and around Lansdowne.

We are calling on the City of Cape Town's directorate for Safety and Security ( Alderman JP Smith) and the office of the Mayor ( Geordin Hill - Lewis ) to take immediate action.

We need an immediate increase in  traffic policing to enforce existing laws and curb the rampant violations taking place. It is imperative to hold violators accountable and set an example that reckless driving will not be tolerated.

Furthermore, we strongly urge city planners to halt any further development of commercial spaces along Wetton Road from Wetton Circle to Chukker Road. Expansions in this area will exacerbate traffic congestion and make enforcement efforts even more challenging. Before any new developments are approved, there needs to be a comprehensive traffic study and community consultation to address the current crisis and propose sustainable solutions.

It's time for our local government to hear our concerns and take meaningful action. Together, we can push for a safer, more organized, and less congested Lansdowne. By signing this petition, you are supporting a necessary change toward creating a safer environment for all road users. Join us in urging our leaders to prioritize safety and law enforcement on our roads. Sign this petition to demand immediate action that will safeguard our community's future.
