My heart shattered into pieces. In less than 24 hours, I lost my three beloved dogs at a New York boarding facility, a place that was supposed to keep them safe while I was away. This tragedy was not an isolated incident. On August 23-24, 21 other dogs suffered a similar fate, left in a shed without water or ventilation for eleven agonizing hours. They were abandoned and neglected, treated as objects rather than living beings with spirits and feelings.
In New York, pets are legally recognized as "property," a classification that allows boarding facilities to operate without licensing, oversight, or accountability. This lack of regulation creates a breeding ground for negligence and, as I've seen firsthand, heartbreak and loss. It's time for change.
We demand the enactment of the Safe Pet Boarding Act. This Act would introduce necessary licensing for boarding facilities, enforce strict safety standards, and mandate regular inspections to ensure compliance. Facilities that fail to meet these standards must face real penalties, ensuring the safety and well-being of our pets.
