Enforce Stronger Legal Protections for Dogs, Our Beloved Family Members

The issue

As a person who has seen the dire consequences of dog harm firsthand and who understands the profound bond between humans and their canine companions, I initiate this petition with a heavy heart and a spark of hope. This is not just my story; it resonates with thousands across the world who value their “furry overlords” as more than pets, but as irreplaceable members of their family.

Our dogs are kept for diverse reasons: for companionship, protection, and even assistance in day-to-day tasks. They give us love and loyalty without asking for anything more than our love in return. Yet, despite being considered part of our families, dogs do not receive the same protections under the law when they become victims of harm, kidnap, or death. In such instances, the resulting legal actions often do not reflect the gravity of these horrific acts.

It's time to ask ourselves: if we consider our dogs as family, shouldn't our laws do the same?

Government data indicates a rising trend in dog theft and abuse. In the UK alone, dog theft crimes rose by nearly 200% amid the pandemic, reflecting an urgent need for more stringent legal protections for dogs (BBC News, 2021).

We urge lawmakers to modify current legislation to provide equal consideration to the harm, kidnap or death of dogs, in the same way as harm inflicted upon humans. Additionally, we call for law enforcement to view these cases with the seriousness they deserve, because losing a dog to a criminal act is like losing a family member.

We embrace a future where the binding value of compassion extends beyond humanity – towards all creatures we share our lives with. It’s time for our legal system to reflect our values and provide justice for our canine family members. Please, sign this petition – not just for your dog, but for the countless dogs who suffer in silence.
